Chapter

Sixteen

“Boone and Orion are on their way with most of the warriors.” Cain looked at him, then Lake, before pouring out tea for them and for Dex.

Eyv blinked. “What about Durango and Reno?”

“They had to stay.”

“What?” He and Lake spoke together, both of them shocked, hurt.

“There’s a situation we didn’t anticipate, I’m afraid.”

“What could possibly make them stay?” Dex asked for them. “It’s dangerous to be that close to a dragon keep when they had the warriors smuggled out already.”

“There’s a child. An infant.” The words fell from Cain’s lips, and he knew they were true.

His mate loved babies. And Reno…he would put his life on the line for anyone smaller and weaker than the rest of them.

“What’s wrong? How is there a baby?” Lake demanded.

“Apparently it bonded with a stone that the keep did not wish to part with. And so they sent the baby away to be killed, but the warriors in question wouldn’t do the job. They smuggled the child to the island, but they can’t leave dragon waters without the stone.”

“They can’t go in the keep. You have to tell them.” Lake stood, expression horrified. “I need Skye!”

“I’ll get him.” Dex was off and running in moments. He was pretty fast these days, fully recovered from losing his own stone.

“What is it?” Eyv stared at Lake, his heart pounding. All dragon keeps were dangerous, but Lake seemed to be in a true panic.

“Everything from the outside is booby-trapped. That’s why Mother had to—” Lake closed his eyes, and Eyv could hear it, Lake calling to his mother.

Soon enough, they had Lady Arden and her mate Heather, as well as Lake’s brother Skye.

“They’re trying to get into the keep, Skye,” Lake said. “To get the painite.”

“They’re doing what?” The other three from Lake’s keep shouted it together.

“Why? Why would they want to steal it?”

“Because a baby bonded with it.”

Skye actually took a step back, his face slack with shock. “With the painite. Really?”

Lake’s mother sat hard, her scales gray.

“Okay…” He felt lost. “What does that mean? Of course I know about bonding, but isn’t that good? Joyous? A sign of power?”

“It is.” Arden, Lake’s lady mother, came to sit with them. “But that stone is the keep’s most valuable possession. My old husband’s pride and joy. No child should ever have been allowed to bond with it. And he’ll kill to maintain it.”

This was a problem, and Eyv thought Cain had to see it. “Cain, what are we going to do?”

Cain glanced at him. “What do you mean?”

“You’ve saved five seers, two royals, five infants, Lake. Now you say twenty warriors, another infant, and you’re having Durango and Reno break into their keep for the most expensive stone on earth? This is an act of war!”

Cain sat there for a moment, not moving, seeming to draw inward. “I didn’t think about that.”

“No, clearly not.” Arden smiled to ease the sting, he thought, but there it was.

Skye shook his head. “The infants, the warriors—they were slated for death. We can be blamed for the stone and the four seers.
